First Aid competitions test lifesavers’ knowledge and practical skills in medical emergencies. Competitors respond to simulated scenarios involving CPR, spinal management, bandaging, and patient assessment, judged on accuracy, efficiency, and professionalism. Events are typically team-based.
The Champion Lifesaver competition combines multiple disciplines, including surf swimming, board paddling and beach running, as well as practical lifesaving skills including CPR and first aid, into a single individual event. It identifies the most skilled, versatile, and fit lifesaver across surf and beach disciplines.
Patrol competitions simulate real-life lifesaving duties on the beach. Teams perform timed exercises in rescue scenarios, first aid, patient assessment, and equipment use, demonstrating teamwork, efficiency, and practical lifesaving skills under pressure.
Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R) is one of Surf Life Saving’s most traditional and prestigious team events, showcasing precision, discipline, and lifesaving skills. Teams of two, five, or six members perform a simulated rescue and resuscitation of a patient, following strict procedures and judged on accuracy, timing, and teamwork. The event demonstrates core surf lifesaving techniques such as patient approach, rescue methods, CPR, and signals communication. Competitors wear traditional uniforms and perform synchronised movements with military-style precision. R&R reflects the origins of surf lifesaving, emphasising teamwork, rescue proficiency, and the commitment to maintaining excellence in lifesaving methods and training.
