The Bronze Medallion is the core qualification for becoming a surf lifesaver in Australia and is your gateway to making a real difference on the beach. With a proud history spanning over 100 years, this nationally recognised award equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to participate in lifesaving patrol operations and surf sports.
Throughout the course, you will be trained in first aid, resuscitation, and practical surf rescue techniques, and be supported by experienced instructors with all necessary equipment provided by the Club. You’ll also complete a 400m swim within 9 minutes, ensuring you have the fitness required to operate safely in the water. Assessment includes both practical and theoretical components, giving you the confidence to respond in real-life situations.
Courses are delivered across the Dry season, but usually are conducted prior to the start of the patrols (start of June). To enrol, you must be at least 15 years old by the final assessment, be a financial member of a surf lifesaving club, and meet the swim requirement prior to undertaking water activities.
Achieving your Bronze Medallion opens the door to becoming an active member of a patrol team, helping to keep your local beach safe. It also unlocks a wide range of opportunities to further develop your skills — from advanced first aid qualifications to operating rescue equipment such as Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs) and Jet Skis.
If you’re looking to build confidence, learn life-saving skills, and be part of a supportive and active community, the Bronze Medallion is the perfect place to start.
